PEMCO is a vibrant community of musicians dedicated to delivering free, high-quality performances that inspire and unite audiences
The Paul Evensen Memorial Chamber Orchestra (PEMCO) is a community of musicians from the St. Louis and Southwestern Illinois region. Originally formed as a “pop-up” orchestra in late 2024, the ensemble continued performing through 2025 and officially re-formed as PEMCO to carry its work forward.
Beginning in 2026 and beyond, PEMCO is dedicated to presenting meaningful and inspiring performances in a friendly, educational, and supportive environment—serving both our audiences and the musicians who make the music possible.
PEMCO is named in honor of Paul Evensen, a member of Wydown United Church. Paul was known for his intellect, compassion, and exceptional organization. He cared deeply for people and had a remarkable ability to build meaningful connections—even with those who held very different perspectives.
Paul believed strongly in inclusion, justice, and reconciliation. Although his life was cut short by glioblastoma, his spirit and values continue to inspire our work and our commitment to community.
In keeping with Paul’s belief in inclusion, our mission is to provide free, high-quality concerts for all who wish to attend. We believe music is an educational, cultural, and spiritual resource that should be accessible to everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status. In keeping with Paul’s belief in reconciliation, we believe music has the power to touch people’s hearts, minds, and souls, helping to heal divisions both personal and interpersonal.
We also celebrate musical variety. From Beethoven to Beyoncé, our programs reflect the richness and diversity of the musical world and the communities we serve.
